a) Identifying the style and purpose of a letter
Select 2 Ss to read out letters A and B to the
class. Elicit the purpose of each and invite
comments from the class about how they differ
stylistically.

A giving advice to a friend (informal)
B asking for advice from an agony aunt (semi-
formal)
The style is different because of the person
the letter is being written to. We use an
informal style for letters to friends and a
semi-formal style for letters to people we do
not know well or when we want to be more
polite or respectful.
b) Understanding the structure of a letter
Read the questions in the rubric to the class
and elicit the answers from Ss around the class.
