The head of the United Kingdom is the Queen but in fact she doesn’t rule. At the beginning of the 20th century Britain had a lot of colonies. But now these countries are independent states. And in 1949 Britain founded the Commonwealth. The power belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government. The British Parliament consists of two «Houses»: The House of Lords and the House of Commons. The members of the House of Lords are not elected. They are permanent. The members of the House of Commons are elected. The British people elect 650 members of the House of Commons every five years.
